kindred spirits counseling

“Kindred Spirits” evokes the sensation of meeting someone for the first time but somehow knowing we can form a close bond with them. Research has shown finding a “kindred spirit” in your therapist is essential. The top predictor of success in therapy is the relationship you have with your therapist. You have to feel comfortable enough with your therapist to be vulnerable, try new things, and know your therapist accepts you as you are to make progress.
Hi! I’m Ryann, and I am an Associate Licensed Counselor in the state of Alabama under the supervision of Kaylie Pennington, LPC-S. I became a therapist to become a “kindred spirit” to teenagers who are beginning to push away their caregivers yet crave having a safe, supportive adult to open up to.
If you’re a parent and have noticed your child:
● Becoming withdrawn, tearful, and struggling to keep up in school while actively resisting your help after previously being a high-achiever or “gifted student.”
● Struggling to sleep at night after lying awake playing out social scenarios or worrying about upcoming assignments.
● Feeling distressed by missing the “secret code” their peers have to fit in at school. I’m here to help your child identify ways to cope, further cement their strengths, develop self-compassion, learn to advocate for themselves, and bridge the gap between you and your child to allow them to use you as a support. I also love working with parents to find resources and tools to best support their child.
In addition to working with teens, I’ve also built skills for working with:
● Parents who have noticed their own wounds from their adolescent years are impacting their relationship with their child and causing distress.
● Teachers who feel enveloped by the expectations and emotional load that comes with being part of the public school system.
● Adults who struggle to feel attuned to their feelings and have lost the ability to listen to their own voice.
If any of this resonates with you, feel free to reach out! If we talk, and you feel I may not be your or your child’s kindred spirit, I would love to help you find a therapist who is.
